Small clinical study of Buteyko Method at Limerick Regional Hospital shows 70% reduction of Rhinitis in Asthma

Small clinical study of Buteyko Method at Limerick Regional Hospital shows 70% reduction of Rhinitis in Asthma

Dr Adelola et al. from the Department of Otolaryngology at Limerick University Hospital in Ireland investigated the effectiveness of the Buteyko technique on nasal symptoms of patients with asthma.

26 volunteers with a diagnosis of asthma and chronic rhinitis, ranging in age from 23 – 60 years were recruited from the general population. Training took place weekly for three weeks. Participants were followed for three months.

Now try to keep a straight face in reading these results and the tongue in cheek abbreviations dreamed up by the Limerick hospital research team.

Nasal obstruction symptom evaluation (NOSE) included: nasal congestion or stuffiness, poor sense of smell, snoring, nasal blockage or obstruction, trouble breathing through the nose, trouble sleeping, having to breathe through the mouth, unable to get enough air through the nose during exercise or exertion and sense of panic from inability to get enough air through the nose.

Sinonasal obstruction symptom evaluation (SNOT) scores showed a 71% reduction of rhinitis symptoms in asthma at three month follow up.
